Should I Run My Humidifier All Night?

Even one night of poor-quality sleep can be enough to affect your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Sleep that is continually disrupted or fitful can lead to long-term issues. With so many of us struggling to get a good night’s rest, it’s no wonder the self-care conversation has turned toward sleep hygiene and how the habits and environment you create support your ideal night’s sleep. Improving your nighttime routine and curating the ideal bedroom environment can go a long way toward improving overall wellness for you and your loved ones.

A big piece of creating a soothing environment is air quality. Humidity levels are part of the equation. If it’s too damp, you risk waking up sweaty and creating an atmosphere where dust mites thrive, but exposure to dry air can make it difficult to stay asleep due to dry skin, itchy eyes, sore throat, and increased risk of respiratory infections1. Sleeping with a humidifier is a simple upgrade for glowing skin, cozy nights, and a comfortable space — to keep you feeling your best. As a leader in home hydration, Canopy is here to help you create the ideal sleep environment using a humidifier.

How Dry Air Affects Sleep Quality

According to the EPA, you should aim for a humidity level between 30% and 50% inside your home2. Low humidity levels can cause mucous membranes to dry out, leading to congestion, nosebleeds, itchy eyes, and increased snoring. Dry air can also cause itchy, flaky skin, dehydration, and chapped lips. The discomfort from any one of these symptoms can keep you from entering or maintaining deeper stages of sleep like slow-wave or REM cycles, both of which are critical for physical and mental recovery3.

Maintaining ideal humidity levels in your bedroom helps create an environment that supports deep, uninterrupted rest by preventing and soothing these symptoms. Hydrated air could be the difference between restless nights and sweet dreams.

The Benefits of Sleeping With a Humidifier

When home humidity levels drop below 40%, the dry air makes your environment less conducive to sleep, but you can soothe many of the uncomfortable effects with humidifiers. Sleep specialists recognize that hydrating the air in your sleep space decreases airway resistance in the body, which can occur when tissue gets too dry4.

As a result, the benefits of a humidifier while sleeping include:

  • Keeping the sinuses healthy by reducing dryness, irritation, and inflammation
  • Lowering the risk of respiratory infections
  • Alleviating a scratchy morning throat
  • Relieving allergy symptoms by trapping airborne allergens in moisture
  • Reducing snoring for quieter nights
  • Hydrating the skin by reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL)5

Canopy’s Bedside 2.0 Humidifier and Large Room Humidifier operate with evaporative technology, which means they draw in air and fan it through a moistened wick. The air is then fanned back into the room with newly contained water droplets, meaning they work without releasing mist or vapor.

Both are esthetician-loved humidifiers with mold-inhibiting technology* and dishwasher-safe parts. The updated Bedside 2.0 Humidifier now offers sleep settings with a dimmable red light, a soft nightlight, 3 soundscapes, and backlit controls so you can change settings without searching in the dark or interrupting your rest.

* - Humidifier does not treat air; inhibits mold growth in device & filter. Third-party testing shown to inhibit growth of Aspergillus niger (commonly known as Black Mold) based on standard GB/T 23332-2018 comparing mold growth in humidifiers with and without Smart Persistent Airflow.

Is It Safe to Use a Humidifier All Night?

The benefits of adding a humidifier to your sleep routine are clear, but you might be wondering how long you should run a humidifier and if it's safe to do so overnight or unattended. The ideal duration for running a humidifier depends on your specific needs and the humidity level in your home, but you can run a humidifier all night.

Generally, it's safe to run a humidifier for 8 to 12 hours per day, especially during winter months or if you live in a dry climate. During milder seasons and humid climates, aim for 6 to 8 hours. Turn it off if the room starts to feel too damp.

Many modern heating and cooling systems monitor humidity levels in your home, but if you have older equipment, you may wish to purchase a hygrometer to know when it’s time to shut them off. Consistent humidity above 50% can create an environment where mold and bacteria thrive6.

Canopy designs include features like Smart Persistent Airflow™ (SPA™) technology, which keeps the fan running until it's nearly dry inside, and our embedded UV LED that cleanses the water you add. Cleaning is a breeze on our 2.0 models, which include dishwasher-safe parts, a new removable grill, and a wider tank opening for fuss-free maintenance. With Canopy, you can rest well in comfortable, hydrated air.
