What to Do About “Morning Throat” Discomfort

If you’ve ever gone to bed feeling fine and then woken up with an irritated throat, you might wonder why does my throat hurt in the morning? Though it could be a cold or some other respiratory virus, more often than not, "morning throat" stems from other, less obvious issues closely related to your ear, nose, and throat (ENT) health1.

Whether it’s the result of seasonal issues like dry air or allergies, sleep disturbances, or the overall indoor air quality of your home, Canopy is here to help you get to the root of why you’re waking up with a sore throat and how to soothe scratchiness so you get the best sleep possible and start your day feeling refreshed and well. It may just be time to give your air a glow-up!

Common Causes of "Morning Throat"

Dry Air

Sometimes the issue is as simple as the humidity level in your home. If you live in a dry climate or run heat or air conditioning, the air can pull moisture from your throat overnight2. The ideal humidity level for indoors is between 30–50%. Placing a humidifier in your bedroom can keep the humidity at an optimal level for sleep.

Sleep Apnea & Snoring

Sleep Apnea causes airway blockages during sleep, and the vibrations that happen in your throat when you snore create further dryness and irritation.

Mouth Breathing & Allergies

Nasal blockage caused by chronic sinus issues or allergies may force you to breathe through your mouth during sleep. The nose warms and humidifies air before it reaches your throat, so mouth breathing leads to dryness and irritation. Allergies also cause post-nasal drip, which inflames the throat1.

Dehydration

If you aren’t staying adequately hydrated, your body produces less saliva, thereby inhibiting the function of your mucous membranes. If you go to bed already dehydrated, it’s a recipe for a dry, irritated throat.

Lifestyle Factors

Excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, vaping, and overuse of your voice can also cause "morning throat." Dietary choices, like spicy or acidic foods, are also associated with chronic cough cases and throat irritation are caused by acid reflux or GERD2. Since it’s more common when lying down, it could be a culprit in why you’re waking up with throat irritation3.

How to Ease Symptoms of "Morning Throat"

Making small environmental and lifestyle changes can lead to noticeable improvement of symptoms and a better night’s sleep.

Address Potential Lifestyle Triggers

Reduce the amount of acidic and spicy foods you eat, avoid caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime, take over-the-counter antacids, and elevate your bed3.

Address Nasal Congestion & Sleep Apnea

Hydrate to thin the mucous, minimize allergens in your home by dusting and vacuuming at least once a week and changing air filters often, and use antihistamines, decongestants, allergy medications, and nasal saline spray4. CPAP therapy, weight loss, and side sleeping can also mitigate symptoms related to sleep apnea1.

Upgrade Your Sleep Environment

Air quality plays an important role in how well you breathe and sleep. Minimizing allergens by purifying air and optimizing the humidity in your sleep environment provides an excellent multi-pronged approach toward how to get rid of a morning sore throat.

An air purifier enhances air quality by drawing air in and filtering contaminants like dander, pollen, smoke, and other particles.. Then, fresh air is released back into your living space for more comfortable breathing. While humidifiers don’t directly remove allergens from the air, they can help ease allergy symptoms by soothing nighttime dryness in the nasal passages and throat5.

According to Dr. Gabriella Dauer, MD, FAAP, "Air purification is something I recommend to patients of all ages. As a pediatrician and mom of two, I truly believe and recommend every home to have air purifiers. From our toddlers with stuffy noses to our grandparents with sore throats, air purification can reduce dust and other indoor air pollutants which are common triggers."*
