What is aromatherapy? When you hear the word, you likely think of using pleasant scents to create a calming atmosphere. While this is indeed a large perk of aromatherapy, it actually can be so much more — especially when done the Canopy way.
Aromatherapy involves the use of essential oils to obtain various health effects and improve overall well-being. For example, bergamot, eucalyptus, and peppermint oil are sometimes used for the common cold and flu, while jasmine and citrus oils are thought to boost focus and creativity. Most often, aromatherapy is used to promote relaxation and stress relief. There is also evidence that certain essential oils may help you sleep better and soothe anxiety, especially when paired with meditation.
What are essential oils, and how does aromatherapy work? Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts that maintain the natural smell (or essence) of that plant. Because they come from various sources, they boast different properties and aromatherapy benefits.
When you inhale these aromas, the scent molecules stimulate your nervous system and send signals to your brain, resulting in the release of hormones like serotonin and endorphins. These hormones regulate bodily functions such as pain, digestion, and stress. Releasing these hormones can improve your well-being in many ways, from reducing your perception of pain to improving your mood.
For these reasons, aromatherapy has become a lifestyle for many. At Canopy, we want to support your health and wellness goals. That’s why we’ve made aromatherapy a key part of our product line. From our Aroma Diffuser to our humidifiers and showerheads, we’ve incorporated aroma diffusion features into easy-to-use devices to enhance your lifestyle. Our aroma oils and stones allow you to easily add your favorite fragrances anywhere — whether you’re at home, traveling, or at the office.
Canopy Diffusion Frequently Asked Questions
Which Canopy Products Have Diffusion Features?
All Canopy devices are built with simple and clean aroma diffusion capabilities. We make it easy to fill your space with beneficial scents wherever you go.
The Canopy Bedside, Nursery, Large Room, and Portable humidifiers all contain a dedicated diffusion feature for effortless aromatherapy. You can also use our ceramic aroma stones, which allow you to switch scents easily. As your humidifier delivers clean, filtered moisture, the diffuser releases your chosen aroma into the room. With each humidifier, you can choose either a one-time aroma sample or a subscription for a 3-piece aroma kit every 45 days.
If you are only looking to benefit from aromatherapy, try the Canopy Aroma Diffuser. Once you add your aroma, this device provides up to 15 continuous days of scent in rooms of up to 400 square feet. There’s no mist or water involved, just clean diffusion—meaning no mess or mold. It also provides a safer and longer-lasting alternative to candles. With different fan speeds and diffusion settings, you can easily customize your scent experience.
Whether you wish to start your day with an invigorating aroma or end your night with a more calming scent, our filtered shower head gives you the ability to combine the benefits of aromatherapy with cleaner water free of dissolved minerals and added chlorine. With softer, healthier skin and hair, as well as an improved mood, you’ll feel your overall well-being improve with every shower.
Essential oils should only be used on the diatomite stones and diffusion wells, not directly in any of the Canopy devices. They should also never be used topically or internally.
How Do I Add Fragrance to My Canopy Humidifier?
To maximize aromatherapy benefits, it is important to know how to use essential oils with your Canopy humidifier. Our humidifiers offer two fragrance application options: the aroma stones and the diffusion well.
Aroma stones allow you to quickly and easily swap out fragrances. Place the ceramic stone in the divot on the top grate of the humidifier. Just add 2–5 drops of your chosen aroma oil on top of the stone, diffuse, and enjoy.
The diffusion well stores more oil than the aroma stones, which is ideal for gradual, extended scenting. To use the diffusion well, place the well in the tray inside the humidifier. Next, remove the cap of your aroma oil and turn the bottle upside down so that it can drain inside the well.
How Do I Add Fragrance to My Canopy Diffuser?
To get the most out of your aromatherapy experience, it is important to know how to use essential oils with your Canopy diffuser. Like the humidifier models, our diffusers are compatible with both aroma stones and diffusion wells. Load the diffusion well inside the tray with the oil bottle upturned into the well. Close the diffuser and choose your setting. It will take about 30–60 minutes for the aroma to permeate the room, but in the meantime, you can add a few drops to the aroma stone on top of the diffuser.
To use the aroma stone, place it in the divot located on top of the device. Add 2–5 drops of your oil of choice, then press the button on top to turn the fan on to your preferred setting.
How Do I Keep My Canopy Device Clean When Using Aroma Kits and Accessories?
Canopy aroma oils are formulated to be clean and highly potent, providing a superior scent without the harmful ingredients. Our devices are also built to run clean, and we thoughtfully design them to be just as easy to keep clean. There are just a few maintenance tips to keep in mind.
First, avoid removing the protective plastic film when using aroma stones. Our aroma stones are porous diatomite ceramic pieces. The plastic seals the bottom to protect your device from leaks when in use.
When cleaning the diffuser, simply wipe the top grate and sides with a warm cloth. The humidifier’s tray, grill, cap, and tank are all safe to clean in the dishwasher. Any electrical components, including the body of the humidifier, should not be placed in the dishwasher. These components can be cleaned with damp cloth. No complicated disassembly or external tools necessary.
There’s no need to worry about causing a mess when using aroma kits with a Canopy showerhead, since the felt diffusion tags do not need to be attached to the showerhead itself. Just make sure to place the felt on a non-porous and non-painted surface when adding your essential oils.
Can I Use Aroma Kits With a Canopy Shower Head?
Yes! Canopy aroma kits are compatible with any of our devices. While the aroma stone is only used in our humidifiers and diffuser, our filtered shower heads come with a felt diffusion tag that you can easily use with the oils in our aroma kits. Place the diffusion tag on a flat surface and add about 15 drops of aroma oil, then hang it on the pipe behind your showerhead or on a shelf nearby. The fragrance will naturally permeate the air within your bathroom. Rinse off with our Handheld Filtered Showerhead, which is also equipped with the Felt Diffuser for an invigorating aromatherapy shower experience. When the scent begins to fade, all you need to do is add more oil to the felt.
Why Aromatherapy Matters for Wellness
Are you aware of the power scent can have over your mood and sense of well-being? You might not realize it, but there’s a strong connection between aroma and memory, your energy and stress levels, and your physical health. There’s a reason essential oils and scented candles are big business, and hotels and other businesses invest in signature scents: We respond to aromas, even when we don’t realize it.
How Aromatherapy Affects the Brain
People have used aromatherapy for thousands of years for therapeutic purposes. Our olfactory nerves, or sense of smell, directly connect to the amygdala and the hippocampus, the parts of the brain that control memories and emotional responses. That’s why a whiff of a specific flower can trigger happy thoughts of a loved one, for example, or why simply stepping into a spa that’s diffusing calming lavender can help you feel instantly more relaxed.
Incorporating aromatherapy into your daily routine by diffusing different scents in your Canopy Diffuser or Humidifier can have a positive impact on overall physical and mental wellness for everyone in your family. Dozens of studies show that inhaling the scent of essential oils can support your long-term health and reduce symptoms of stress, fatigue, colds, and other ailments.
The Mental and Emotional Benefits of Aromatherapy
Specific scents can help you feel more energized and alert or create a space where you can unwind and relax.
Some common scents and their effects include:
- Jasmine, for lifting your mood
- Citrus, including orange, lemon, and lime, for energy and mental clarity
- Rose, for comfort
- Lavender, for calm
- Bergamot, for stress reduction
- Chamomile, for alleviating anxiety and feelings of calm
- Rosemary for memory and focus
- Peppermint, for mental sharpness
You can find these scents in Canopy’s custom scent blends. Try the Rituals Aroma Kit for scents like Salt Cave, with calming chamomile and clarity-refining lime, and refreshing Emerald Grove with energizing lemon oil. Or pick up a Bloom Aroma Kit and enjoy Spring Jasmine, a bright, happiness-inducing blend of jasmine, orange, and warm amber.
The Physical Benefits of Aromatherapy
Inhaling your favorite scents can have physical benefits, too. From improved sleep (try the Canopy Little Dreams set for a sleep-inducing lavender and vanilla scent) to reduced congestion when you have a cold or the flu, aromatherapy supports your body as well as your mind.
Try adding some of these essential oils to your diffuser:
- Eucalyptus, to clear clogged sinuses
- Peppermint, another sinus-clearing option that can also reduce fatigue
- Lemon, for reducing nausea
Some of these scents are available in the Canopy Restore Aroma Kit; the set includes Sweet Eucalyptus, a refreshing blend of eucalyptus, honey, and birch.

What to Do With Aromatherapy Oils Around Kids and Pets
Our pure essential oil blends are designed with children's safety and pets in mind and don’t contain synthetic dyes, parabens, mineral oils, or sulfates. However, adults need to take precautions when using them when there are curious hands and paws and sensitive little noses around. Avoid diffusing scents for longer than an hour and keep the oils and diffuser or humidifier out of the reach.
We encourage parents to add a humidifier to their nursery to protect their baby’s skin and respiratory health and diffuse soothing aromas at night. But keep in mind that essential oils are not recommended for infants under 3 months of age.
Even though Canopy devices don’t produce heat, unlike many other humidifiers and diffusers, they do rely on electricity to operate—and it’s important to keep plugged-in devices on a flat, stable surface kids and pets can’t get to. You don’t want to risk spilling any water near electrical outlets or damaging the unit. Additionally, you don’t want to lose the aroma stone or run the risk of a child or pet putting it in their mouth.
If your child has ingested essential oils or made skin contact, call poison control at 1-800-222-1222 for guidance and reach out to your family’s pediatrician. Similarly, contact your vet if you have questions or concerns about using aroma oils around your pets.
Using Your Canopy Fragrance Oils and Devices
Enjoying the benefits of aromatherapy is simple with Canopy. Simply add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to a diatomite scent stone or the scent well of your Canopy humidifier or diffuser—not directly into the unit—and enjoy your favorite aromas. Our humidifiers’ evaporative technology helps disperse the fragrance while hydrating the air, while our waterless diffuser uses a fan.
Whether you’re looking for something soothing at home or an energizing aroma for the office, you’re just minutes away from getting the full effect of our distinctive fragrance blends. The Aroma Diffuser and Portable Humidifier both have three fan settings that let you adjust the output. The auto mode built into our Bedside Humidifier, Nursery Humidifier, and Large Room Humidifier relies on sensors to detect current conditions and create the ideal level of moisture in the air, so you can add more drops to the scent stone for a stronger aroma or fewer drops for a light, subtle experience.
These oils are made to be used with our devices, not to be taken internally, applied to the skin, or added to bathwater. However, you can add fragrance to your shower with our Felt Diffuser tags.
With a few simple steps, your whole home can be a Canopy home with clean, hydrated air and inviting scents.
